ONGC Market Cap Soars, becomes India's Most Valuable Public Sector Enterprise

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has seized a monumental market triumph, ascending to become India's highest-valued Central Public Sector Enterprise. This milestone, achieved on November 12, 2025, saw ONGC decisively surpass the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in market capitalisation. This rise is more than a fleeting financial high; it reflects a deep-seated strength and renewed confidence that resonates far beyond mere investor sentiment.

milestone confirms

This milestone confirms the strengthening of ONGC’s core operations and its renewed confidence in delivering sustained, long-term value. Early signals were evident as the stock hit an all-time high of ₹323.60 on July 15, 2024, with market capitalisation exceeding ₹4 lakh crore and the scrip outperforming the Nifty Oil & Gas index. ONGC's success stems from its focus on operational excellence and financial prudence. These efforts are clear as the company posted its highest-ever consolidated net profit of ₹57,101 crore in FY24, highlighting robust fundamentals. Performance trends were already firm with the September 2023 quarter reporting consolidated revenue of ₹1.49 lakh crore and operating profit of ₹28,255.3 crore. This followed the FY23 net profit of ₹35,440.5 crore, establishing a base for continuous efficiency and margin improvements.

A major catalyst is the collaboration with BP Exploration (Alpha) Ltd. as the Technical Services Provider (TSP) for the Mumbai High (MH) field, accelerating advanced recovery interventions in this mature asset. This outward-looking approach is consistent with ONGC’s history of technology partnerships, including the MoU signed with Ecopetrol on EOR/IOR at the 7th NOC Forum (Istanbul), and exploring a Deepwater Centre of Excellence with Petrobras and Statoil. Domestically, ONGC’s asset teams have implemented tighter cost controls, enhanced digital monitoring, and optimized the smarter deployment of rigs and facilities. Crucially, the Eastern Offshore Asset (EOA) at Kakinada is supporting this transformation: the successful production commencement at KG DWN 98/2 in January 2024 was hailed as a “remarkable step” toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat, immediately augmenting domestic volumes and anchoring energy reliability on the east coast.

The company’s reputation as a wealth creator has been reiterated across cycles, from achieving the second spot in BT 500 (2018) to strong rallies in 2022, becoming the “highest corporate wealth creator in independent India”.

Besides these reforms, the TSP initiative, asset level discipline, cost optimisations highlighted in the financials and strengthened offshore operations have given ONGC a sharper operating foundation. The scrip’s resilient climb, from the 2020 rebound phases reiterates the resilient character of the company.

As ONGC moves ahead with its ambitious Energy Now & Next vision, this milestone stands as a significant moment of pride for every ONGCian.
