| Economic Model of Environmental Sustainability for Hydrocarbon Industry |
Dr. J P N Giri December 17, 2003 |
| |
Abstract
Energy use is the principal component of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Oil, gas and coal represent about 90 percent of the commercial energy used worldwide. Forecasts of energy demand show that fossil fuel usage will increase as a result of economic growth globally, especially in developing regions. Bringing together the oil and gas industry and associations from around the world to address the climate change issues, The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) entered into force in 1994, with the defined long-term goal of achieving the "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system". The Kyoto Protocol to the UNFCCC, agreed in 1997, specifies targets and timetables for emissions limits, accordingly the Kyoto Mechanisms offer significant opportunities to achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions in production and consumption of carbon energy, at lower societal costs, than other measures, while providing prospects for environmental protection and sustainable development. |
