ONGC combined with its subsidiary MRPL, bagged awards in seven categories at the coveted ‘Oil Industry Safety Awards 2008-09’ function held by Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) in Delhi on 20 October, 2009.
Out of the 12 categories, ONGC and MRPL were eligible for eight categories and the duo walked away with as many as seven awards as per details below

The awards were received by ONGC and MRPL teams led by Mr. R S Sharma, CMD, ONGC and Chairman, MRPL from Mr. Murli Deora, Hon’ble Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas in an impressive ceremony. The other dignitaries present in this occasion were Mr. Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. R S Pandey, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr. J B Verma, Executive Director, OISD and others. From ONGC and MRPL, Mr. U K Basu, Managing Director, MRPL; Mr. A K Hazarika, Director (Onshore) & In-Charge HSE; Dr. A K Balyan, Director(HR) & In-charge Business Development; Mr. U N Bose, Director (Technical & Field Services) and Mr. D K Sarraf, Director (Finance), ONGC were also present along with their winning team members.
These awards are given by Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas every year in recognition of the efforts of the oil & gas industry in enhancing safety standards. The awards were adjudged based on least penalty points (fatality, man hours lost, property loss and operational loss), implementation of HSE Management system and implementation of external safety audit (ESA) by OISD recommendations.
Oil industry safety awards were introduced in 1987 to promote HSE culture in inherently risky oil and gas operations. Till 2007 -09, the awards were given in seven categories namely refineries, gas processing plant, oil and gas assets (onshore), cross country pipeline, other processing plant, LPG marketing and POL marketing. This year onwards the categories have increased to a total of twelve.
The Hon’ble Minister, Mr Murli Deora emphasized that ‘Safety First’ should be the motto of all corporates and these awards are a recognition of the efforts of the organisations /individuals and indicative that the Oil and Gas industry is in safe hands’.
Expressing satisfaction on receiving these awards, Mr R S Sharma, CMD, ONGC complimented the Winning Teams from ONGC and MRPL for their efforts in maintaining exemplary safety standards at workplaces even when aiming for increase in productivity.
