Awards & Accolades on HSE

ONGC bagged all the four awards of Directorate General of Mines & Safety (DGMS) in the category of Oil Mines for three consecutive years 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Her Excellency Smt.Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Hon’ble President of India gave away the Awards on 6th May, 2008.
These awards are constituted by Directorate General of Mines Safety, the regulators of Mines Safety. These awards are based on longest accident free period (LAFP) and lowest injury frequency rate (LIFR).

World Environment Foundation awarded ONGC “Golden Peacock Environment Management Award 2008”

Greentech Foundation awarded ONGC “Greentech Environment Excellence Award 2008” for outstanding achievement in Environment Management.

FICCI awarded ONGC the prestigious Environmental Sustainability of Business Award 2007-08 for outstanding achievement in Environment Management

Greentech Foundation awarded Greentech Safety Gold Award 2009 to Corporate HSE, ONGC for outstanding safety management in Petroleum Sector

Specifications of explosion proof wind sock at process platforms have been firmed up which is DGCA requirement

Carried out HSE and Electrical safety audits of C2,C3,C4 extraction project at Dahej prior to commissioning

Engaged M/s DuPont, world leaders in Safety management to carry out Safety Perception Survey across ONGC and detailed assessment of Safety Management and culture at BPA complex involving all operations like drilling, well services, logging, marine and air logistics.

Draft HSE Manual reviewed by Director(Onshore) and put on web site for comments and finalization

Risk Surveyor has compared ONGC operations with operations of European Waters

Environmental Clearances(EC)

>> Obtaining environment clearance (EC) is a statutory requirement under Ministry of Environment & Forests (MOEF), Govt. of India. Recent notification under Environmental Protection Act, 1986 i.e., S.O. 1533 dated 14 September 2006 has made it necessary to obtain prior EC for all activities.

1. 159 proposals of exploratory drilling in ML blocks were applied and granted clearances in one go.
2. EAC (Industry) has visited Uran plant in connection with proposal submitted for expansion for debutanization of Uran Plant for Environment Clearance purpose. Based on their visit the matter was deliberated in EAC and proposal is cleared.
3. Proposal for expansion of Hazira has also been cleared and EC has been issued.
4. 157 development drilling wells from Mehsana have been cleared based on EIA report prepared in house.

Biodiversity Conservation

Mangrove plantation in Gandhar Area

There has been considerable destruction of the mangroves along the coastal belt in India. In ONGC’s operational area of Gandhar along Dhadar river embankment area, destruction of shore line has been witnessed. Being responsible corporate, ONGC has undertaken an ambitious programme of Mangrove conservation & education-awareness through M/S BNHS. There is a plan of plantation of 5,00,000 saplings in the Gandhar region for arresting coastal degradation. Education & awareness programme being conducted in Maharashtra & Gujarat state.

Ringal plantation in upper Himalayas through Uttranchal Bamboo and Fiber Development Board (UBFDB), Uttrakhand

ONGC has been undertaking tree plantation in operational as well as non operational areas. In one of the project of national importance, a project has been sponsored by ONGC to plant Ringal (hill bamboo) in 120 ha of forest land in Upper Himalayan Region of Kedarnath and Joshimath through Uttranchal Bamboo and Fiber Development Board UBFDB), Uttrakhand. 3,00,000 saplings of ringal have been planted during the year 2008. Their growth & survival is being monitored through an independent agency.

• Oil Spill Response

1. ONGC participated in National Level Pollution Response Exercise (NATPOLREX-09) organized by Indian Coast Guard at Mumbai during April 07-09, 2009 and Nov 05, 2009. The exercise was aimed to review the level of preparedness and also to check the capability of integrating the pollution response equipment of the resource agencies through Coast Guard to address large spills. This was based on decision of Director General Coast Guard, during its 12th NOS-DCP meeting held on October 24, 2008 at Mumbai.


2. ONGC has renewed “Participant Agreement” with the M/s Oil Spill Response Limited (M/s OSRL, U.K.) to combat major Oil Spill. ONGC already has capacity to handle accidental oil spills upto 700 tons.

Celebration of World Environment Day on 5th June, 08

World Environment Day was celebrated on 5th June, 2008 for creating awareness on environmental issues of global concern. CMD and Director (Onshore) were present to motivate the employees. Additional Secretary, MOEF was chief guest on the occasion.

Celebration of Safety Day on 4th March, 09

National Safety Day was celebrated on 4th March, 2009 at Jeevan Bharti. CMD administered the safety pledge to the employees including EC members.

HSE Awareness Programme

World Environment day and Safety day are celebrated at Corporate, Asset/Basin/Plant level. Various awareness activities like environment /safety Quiz, Slogan, Poster, Essay competitions are held for employees and for their spouse and children. The purpose of such activities is to create awareness and to provide informal information on environmental/ safety issues to employees, their families and public in the near vicinity through such initiatives. Special talks and lectures are given by experts on the occasion.

Many environmental projects sponsored by ONGC have component of increasing environmental awareness among students and local communities. The project on mangrove plantation in Gandhar area has such component. Besides planting 5,00,000 mangroves, the students and local communities of the coastal areas will be involved and educated on the role of mangroves in maintaining sensitive ecosystem.
