            DRILLSIM – 5000

A new simulator model DRILLSIM – 5000  has  been  installed  and  commissioned  at  IDT.. It is an advanced, full-size rig floor drilling and well control simulator designed to meet the training requirements of equipment operation and well control techniques in onshore and offshore  environments.
The simulator offers immense flexibility in the software and simulated drilling equipment to drill a well and perform well-control exercises. It is equipped with a range of simulated consoles, equipment and manifolds closely resembling those found on a modern drilling rig floor.

FEATURES  OF  SIMULATOR

  •  Deep Water well control simulation
  •  Trapped  gas  removal  in  sub - sea killing
  •  Well control while Tripping / Stripping operations
  •  Simulation of  simultaneous  loss and  kick  situations
  •  Gas  Solubility effect  &  different  rates  of  gas  migration
  •  Driller's,  W&W,  Volumetric, Low Choke methods,  Bull heading
  •  Simulation of well control situations in  HPHT  and  Horizontal  Wells

            INSTRUCTOR CONTROL STATION

The Instructor Station  equipped with touch screen and mouse interface  allows the instructor to set up simulation scenarios, control the simulation exercise and vary the scope of simulation in number of key areas. It also enables to monitor the trainee performance and save and retrieve exercise snap shots at any time. A wide range of training exercises can be performed through the generation of well snapshots, whereby parameters defining the equipment type , well and geological characteristics are chosen to enable a specific training objective to be attained.

        STUDENT CONTROL STATION

The Student Station comprises a touch screen PC allowing the trainee control over key equipment typically not found on the rig floor. A colour Graphic Monitor provides the trainee with a ‘Driller’s  Window presenting  a real time view of down-hole operations. The graphics are interactive with the various Driller’s controls and simulated rig equipments. Using the Mud Control Window the trainee can obtain a display of Pump outputRelief Valve status, Mud density, plastic viscosity and yield point in different tanks. The Student Station  controls  following operations:

  • Motion Compensator
  • Line-up for Mud pits, Trip tank and Strip tank
  • Setting the mud Density and Volume  in Active & Reserve tank

        SUB-SEA  WELL CONTROL

The simulator is equipped with Sub-sea BOP and  Sub-sea Diverter System  Control Console for facilitating the well control operations on a sub-sea rig. The Diverter system  helps in providing training for  shallow gas diversion and stack gas clearing procedures during well control operations on sub-sea. The simulator provides flexibility for the Diverter to be run alone or with the Sub-sea BOP stack. The Software permits the simulation in deep water  up to 10,000 ft water depth. The salient features are:

  • Hang-off on BOP
  • Stack  Gas  Removal
  • Shallow  Gas  Diversion
  • BOP  Console equipped  with Booster Line
  • Deep  Water Simulation up to 10,000 ft  water depth

WELL CONTROL METHODS

The DRILLSIM – 5000  equipped with Surface and Sub-sea BOP stacks,  provides training on how to handle kicks on land and in shallow as well as deep-water operations. The Software permits the kicking zone to be placed at any depth in the well and allows the lost circulation zones to be selected at bottom of the hole or at casing shoe. Trainees can be faced with multiple kicks in the well-bore as well as underground blow-out conditions.

Simulation modeling provides the capability of killing the well using following methods of well control:
  • Driller’s Method
  • Wait and Weight Method
  • Volumetric Method
  • Concurrent Method
  • Low Choke Method
  • Bullheading

 UNUSUAL  SITUATIONS

This  state  of  art  simulator  can simulate  many  down hole  problems in surface  and sub-sea environment.   Trainees  are exposed  to  various  operational  failures  and   their   remedial  measures.  They   in  turn  learn  from  their  own  mistakes  and  obtain the  knowledge  required  to  avoid  a  catastrophe  on  the  actual  rig .  The  following problems can be simulated  on the simulator

  • Stuck  Pipe
  • String  Washout
  • Lost  Circulation
  • Failure  Of   BOP & Pump
  • Plugged / Washed   Choke
  • Plugged / Washed   Nozzle

                  DS-20 FS/W

WCS  has a  another full size  derrick floor  drilling  &  work over simulator  model DS-20FS/W. Operating on a  windows  based  environment,  it  has  the  facilities  to  simulate  both drilling  and  work over well control exercises  in straight, directional & horizontal wells. It  provides  hands - on  training on various  aspects of  oil  well drilling  with  emphasis on  well  control  problems.

FEATURES  OF  SIMULATOR

  •  Different  rates  of  gas  migration
  •  Driller's,  W&W,  Volumetric methods,  Bull heading
  •  Simultaneous  loss &  kick situation
  •  Well control while tripping  &  Stripping operation
  •  Down hole delay in pressure transmission
  •  Trapped  gas  removal  in  sub-sea killing
