There is only one blue planet – our Earth.

The resources of this planet are finite. And they belong to all.

ONGC realizes this.

This realization has led ONGC to adopt a strong Green agenda.

Of the many Green achievements of ONGC, some of the noteworthy ones are:

·      Accelerated investments in frontier Clean Coal Technologies like Underground Coal Gasification (UCG). The enormous untapped coal reserves – which are not normally mineable as they lie in depths of the order of one kilometer – is a priority for ONGC. UCG inherently addresses the issues of environment pollution and site restoration.

·      Bio-remediation of Oil-contaminated sites for preserving soils • Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects to earn certified emission reductions as per the Kyoto Protocol. So far 4 projects have been registered, 2 more projects are under registration and 8 more under development.

·      Development of a Green Drilling Fluid by ONGC’s in-house Institute of Drilling Technology (IDT)

·      Adopted an eco-friendly process for de-sludging crude-oil storage tanks.

·      ONGC is the first company to achieve zero-flaring in Offshore.

·      All of ONGC’s installations - Offshore and Onshore (403 out of 407) - are accredited for globally-recognized certifications (ISO 9000 and 14000 and OHSAS 18000)– the only organization in the world to have done so.

·      On expanding green cover, maintaining biodiversity apart from creating aesthetically satisfying environment are key objectives of the company.

·      ONGC has developed a corporate mission statement on being carbon neutral, one of the few energy majors so far.

·      ONGC has formalised its corporate policy on Climate change and sustainability, the only PSU in India to have done so.

·      As a part of the corporate policy, ONGC has undertaken the onerous task of GHG accounting of all its facilities, again first among the PSUs. GHG accounting is the first step towards attaining the corporate goal of carbon neutrality.

·      To mitigate fugitive methane emission from the processes, ONGC has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the US EPA to undertake Methane to Market project under the Natural Gas Star International programme. ONGC is the first oil major outside the North America to have signed the understanding.

No wonder, ONGC is India’s ‘Greenest Company’, as per Business Today AC-Nielson ORG Marg Survey 2004.

ONGC has also secured the Greentech Excellence Environment Award from Greentech Foundation.
